It rained medals at the pool today for Team GB. Establishing their domination right at the start the swimmers secured three gold medals in the first three finals, thanks to strong performances from Jessica Thielmann from Newcastle upon Tyne in the 800m freestyle (8:53.48), Brentwood’s Roberto Pavoni in the 400m medley (4:28.19) and Preston’s Sophie Ward in the 200m butterfly (2:17.43).
Sara Lougher from Bridgend clinched a silver in the 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:13.47. The men’s 4x100m medley relay team consisting of Ashford’s Karl Botha, Plymouth’s Adam John, Bexhill-on-Sea’s Thomas Parris and Strathaven’s Douglas Scott won a bronze medal in 3:51.66.
Olympian and now swimming coach Rob Greenwood said: “It would be hard to single out one person, the team on a whole came in and performed above the expectation levels that we, the coaches, had upon them. If I was to pick anyone out, probably Aimee Willmott, who came away with four medals, two of which were golds. She was great again today.”
The women’s 4x100m medley relay team with Leeds’ Emma Graham, Sara Lougher, Sophie Ward and Middlesbrough’s Aimee Willmott came in 5th, whereas Driffield’s Richard Butler finished 7th in the 100m backstroke B final (Butler did not qualify for the 200m freestyle).
Team GB finished joint second on the swimming medal table with 14 one behind Italy.
